This project began in 2014, when I started collecting pictures of women from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. I gathered photographs of women I didn’t know but with whom I identified, and in situations that I recognized as familiar. I was intrigued by these women’s existences – mysterious to me – and by the allure of the black and white prints as unique objects. I liked the idea of giving them a new destination in the contemporary world, I didn’t want them to disappear within a shoe box at the flea market. It was as I started questioning the – simultaneous – existence and absence of these women, that I created the first series.
